Why Minimalism

Why minimalism?

I’ve thought hard about what topic I should keep central to my blog – and finally I chose minimalism. Not because it’s a trend, but it’s a guiding principle for many things I do, and has the power to enable me to do everything I want. It affects many areas of my life that it deserves to be the central of this blog. Through my blogs, I will gradually highlight how I use minimalism and experiment with minimalism to achieve my goals.

So what’s minimalism?

There are many definitions out there. In the top 30 minimalism blogs, I love to read how these bloggers define minimalism.

To me, minimalism is doing more with less and focusing on what brings the most value to my and my family’s life.

Others might define it a bit differently, but along the same line. I pulled out a few that I like the most from some minimalism blogs:

How did I end up with minimalism?

Like many people experiencing the same challenges, I was piling up my life with not just tangible but intangible things. While my closet and drawers were getting cramped with clutters, my anxiety slowly ate into my inner peace. There was a point I would spend more time worrying about putting away my piles of clothes than putting it away.

I started losing energy and motivation. The negative space I needed for inspiration and inner peace was no longer there. Living with four other adults and one toddler and two fur babies didn’t help with controlling my space and my mind. It was a challenging time. But I stood back, and I knew there was a way out of all this: minimalizing my life, one thing at a time, one room at a time. And in this blog, I will document my journey and share my experiences along the way. Please tune in and see if we can exchange value through this platform.

Where am I now?

I am not where I want to be, but I am also not where I started. I am cruising through my journey of maximizing my life using minimalism. I also want to reiterate that I am no expert at minimalism (not yet!) and I am in the process of practicing and experimenting. There are some known rules to minimalism and I hope to implement them and make my own rules along the way. Minimalism is not rock science, so there are no hard rules. One rule works for one, might not work for others. But I am open to learn and experiment as much as I can. I know that I might even fall backward, rather than forward along this journey. That’s why I felt minimalism is more about discipline than capability. Everyone can do it, as long as they put their mind and commitment into it.
