Everyone has a special relationship with money.
It is something so intangible but so tangible because it impacts everything around us, the things we own, we wear, and the things we get to do.
I love and respect money. It is what I go to work for, it is what my mom’s 8-hour of work everyday for 5 days a week brings her.
My family and I aim to have enough so we can live comfortably.
Of course there is a limit and I don’t let money overwhelm or stray me off my path.
Over the past 11 years living in Canada, my relationship with money has had a challenging path, too. Now, I am in school, and money is scarce as I am not working. However, this reality helps me realize and identify ways to spend less and save more. Good money habits are what I am working towards and I think we all should.
This year, I have been extremely frugal with money and my spending habits. I recognize the importance of saving money during this time and a good chance to build good spending and shopping habits. How we spend money also manifests our values and perspectives on life.
In my previous posts, you will see that decluttering is a part of my daily life now. Since I realize how much meaningless items I have in my house, I’ve started to declutter. Alongside with decluttering is to buy less. I am so happy I am buying much less now. I don’t turn to Amazon or buying to fix my issues anymore.
Rather, I consider my purchase desires, I review my options, and often I end up with the option of not buying. I learn to fall in love with using what I already have and can have access to.
Another good habit I now have is to track my spending. I have a small notebook to allow me to do this and it is not as hard as I imagine before.
I learn to buy second-hand, especially for clothing. I also limit my purchase to 2-3 items each time I thrift-shop.
I also stop buying from Amazon or at least aim to not buy from Amazon for this year, 2024. ZERO purchases from Amazon so far!
I love reading books so I will aim to borrow books from library or second-hand shop them from local shops. <3
Somethings I will still spend money on of course: necessities, gifts for others, grocery or good food, exercising.
I think it’s great that I spend time reflecting on my relationship with money as it is an integral part of my life of everyone else around me. I am privileged to be in a somewhat financially secure position at this point. I hope the society will move towards a more financially secure place for all of us.

Thao
