A few years back, I met my communications PR professor at UofC sharing with her my communication plan I prepared for work.
Her comment to me was: THIS IS TERRIBLE. It is messy, it is incoherent and non-sense.
I was appalled.
I did not think it was bad, I thought it was good.
Afterwards, she showed me an example of her communications plan.
Honestly, even after that example, I did not know where to start, how to improve the plan despite knowing the theories.
Application of theories is tough.
I tried, I explored, I used examples.
It took me a while to figure it out the reasons why (simply I needed more practice!).
That was a tough time for me not knowing what to do, what was right, or what went wrong, etc.
I then realized the importance of mentorship.
If only I had a mentor back then, I would have figured out the issues much sooner, avoided the miseries, mental stress, and self-doubt. I could have spent those times worrying to learn, expand, or practice.
I hope the culture of mentorship continues on strong across all fields, that we each adopt a mentor or a mentee, so that we can support each other moving forward.
I want to take this chance to thank my mentors who helped me out over the years. Without you, it could have been much more painful and difficult.
Sincerely,
ThaoNB
